What Is the Sciatic Nerve?

The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve is very long, stretching into many different portions of the body. This nerve starts in the lower back and reaches through the buttocks and hips and into the legs. Patients with sciatica typically have it on just one side. The sciatic nerve can be affected by a lot of issues that can cause sciatica. It can be caused by bone spurs on the spine, a herniated disk in the spine, or from spinal stenosis. This is when there is an area of narrowed spine that puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. It’s also possible for a tumor to affect the nerve, and diabetes can affect it as well. When the nerve gets compressed, it can cause pain that is anywhere from mild to moderate to severe.

Are There Other Causes of Sciatica?

Yes, there are many lifestyle issues that can affect the sciatic nerve and cause pain. If you are obese or pregnant, this can also cause sciatic nerve pain. You can also get a pinched nerve from certain motions that you repeat over time. If you drive or sit for many hours every day, this can lead to sciatic nerve pain. If you have a job that requires you to lift and carry heavy items or twist your back often, these can also cause sciatica. The nerve can also be damaged by diabetes.

What Are the Symptoms of Sciatica?

When you have changes in your body that cause pain, it can be a good idea to get help. The sciatic nerve can cause pain at any point along it from the lower back to the legs. If you have pain located in the back of just one leg, it may be sciatica. You might also have tingling somewhere along the nerve or numbness. You might also have muscle weakness in the foot or leg.
