A
Multi-Disciplinary Approach: The
combination of Physical Therapy, Chiropractic, Massage Therapy, and Trigger
Point Therapy allows us to offer the most complete musculoskeletal care
possible. We have on staff an
accomplished and highly credentialed physical therapist, Chris Grabowski, who
has extensive post-surgical and sports medicine experience and is one of the
few Board Certified Sports Rehabilitation Specialists in the NY area. We treat people from Smithtown, Nesconset, Hauppauge, Ronkonkoma, St. James, Stony Brook.
Active Release Technique (ART): Dr. Donald Wallace and Dr. Smith are both Full Body Certified Active Release Technique Practitioners (ART), among the few in Suffolk County. ART is sought after by elite professional and Olympic level athletes and is now considered the “gold standard” in soft tissue treatment. A Sports Illustrated article from November 2012 described how Peyton Manning, the Denver Broncos quarterback, spends one half hour each game day with the same ART provider that Don and I trained under, Dr. Michael Leahy. Dr. Leahy also is an ART provider at the US Olympic Training Center. There are protocols in ART for virtually the entire musculoskeletal system, from the neck to the toes. The techniques involve very specific patient movements and tissue tensions. Some feel that it’s similar to receiving a massage, but with precise movement patterns that optimize the “release” of scar tissue, adhesions and trigger points (knots) in the muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments. Some of the most dramatic results we have been able to achieve have been with carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, frozen shoulders, plantar fasciitis, and (of course) back and neck pain.
Kinesiotaping (CKTP): Dr. Wallace and Dr. Smith are both Certified Kinesiotaping Practitioners, the only two chiropractors in Suffolk County with this certification. Kinesiotaping received extensive positive press during the 2012 Olympics. You may have noticed the tape on Olympic and professional athletes. When we trained in the technique, the program was sponsored and took place at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC, because the hospital wanted its therapists trained in the taping as it has been shown to facilitate lymphatic drainage.
In fact, the New York Yankees Head Trainer, Steve Donohue, was there due to the demand for Kinesio Taping from the Yankee players. Kinesiotape is a flexible tape with specific applications which provide support and stability to muscles and joints, without restricting range of motion. It can help properly align a patella, support a foot with plantar fasciitis, or alleviate a tennis or golfer’s elbow.
Functional Movement Systems (FMS): Dr. Wallace and Dr. Smith have also received certification as FMS Experts (Functional Movement Systems) under Gray Cook, PT, who works with the Indianapolis Colts and various professional athletes. FMS is a ranking and grading system that documents movement patterns that are vital to normal function. The FMS screen generates the Functional Movement Score, which is used to identify problems such as asymmetries, weaknesses, and mobility issues that have been proven in the literature to lead to injury. Athletes that are unable to achieve normal movement patterns on the FMS screen have been shown to be approximately 3.5 times more likely to be injured (see enclosed literature review). When we find deficiencies from the screening, we can then utilize the specific exercises and stretches that will most effectively restore mechanically sound movement patterns which decrease the chances of injury.
Aside from the Indianapolis Colts, other professional teams utilizing the FMS screening system are the Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets in the NFL; the Toronto Blue Jays and Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball; and the Montreal Canadians, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, and Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL. In college sports, FMS is utilized by Stanford, Brigham Young University, Texas A&M, Maryland, and the University of Wisconsin to name a few.
Electrodiagnostic Testing: Dr. Wallace is certified in EMG and NCV testing and has performed over 1000 tests for neurologists and other physicians. This enables us to differentially diagnose peripheral neuropathies, such as carpal tunnel syndrome or diabetic neuropathy, versus radiculopathy related to disc pathology.
Spinal Decompression: We also perform Spinal Decompression on disc patients on three different tables that allow us to decompress in flexion, extension, or lateral flexion, depending on the type of disc herniation and patient response.
In summary, we feel that we are the most credentialed and able chiropractic and physical therapy office to help athletes and other individuals suffering with musculoskeletal issues. We are the only office on Long Island that can offer Physical Therapy, Chiropractic, Active Release, Kinesiotaping, and FMS screening, all under one roof. Additionally, we are fortunate to work in the same building with Ken Moss and his team at Smithtown Acupuncture and Wellness. Ken and his staff of licensed acupuncturists have been an immense help to our patients who often have acupuncture in conjunction with their treatment at our office.
